For some self care may be an early morning walk and a green smoothie, to some it may be heading to the beach to bask in the sun, now don't get me wrong I love doing those kinds of things too, there's a lot of things I like to do for self care (and self love), but pampering and spoiling myself are at the top of my list.
I don't do it all the time, but it's amazing how it can make you feel when you invest in yourself in more ways than one. When I feel good, not just on the inside but on the outside, my whole outlook changes. To some this may seem slightly 'superficial' because so many say that it's what on the inside that counts, but for me when I pamper myself this helps my wellbeing on the inside too.
Here are 4 of my favourite alternative ways to 'self care'..
Investments like feeling 'manicured' all over make such a difference for me. I absolutely love getting my nails done, mani's and pedi's. For me this makes me feel like an absolute goddess, now I know this isn't totally a low tox thing to do, but out of all the good things I do do for my body I allow myself to do this, because it makes me feel good.
I love having my hair cut, though it's something I rarely do, when I do do it I love the feeling you get as if you have been somewhat reborn into your identity. When I have my hair cut and it feels fresh and healthy, it makes me feel healthier when I love my hair style. I am though not at all one to style my hair everyday, which is why I love it when I have it cut shorter, it makes me feel fun and free, it makes me feel more like me.
In a previous post I wrote about how I love taking myself out for a solo coffee date (read it here 'Why I Love Taking Myself Out For Coffee') and it still is one of the most simplest ways I like to spoil myself, and if it's surrounded by a day of pampering, even better. Sometimes it's nice to just enjoy a coffee in total peace by yourself, with nothing to do and nowhere to be.
Self care for me is also investing in small pieces that when I look at them make my heart and soul sing. It's not so much clothes for me, though I love a new outfit, but I really love jewellery. I love a piece of jewellery that eventually becomes a part of me because I want to wear it everyday as I love it so much. Jewellery for me has always held a lot of meaning, I'm not entirely sure why, but for me to wear something it usually has to mean something.
I know that self care definitely starts with your health, but I've learnt that wellbeing for me is much broader than just what you eat and how much you move or sleep. I like to go for an early morning walk or take a yoga class, and I'm all about that big lush superfood salad, but at the same time feeling good in your body isn't always found by having to spend hours in the gym to get your dream body or having endless bowls of greens, that's why every now and again I like to celebrate myself just as I am at this very point in my life through pampering and spoiling myself. Once again, I don't do it all the time, but when the budget allows it, I will. I truly believe that self care looks different for everybody, if someone doesn't do 'health' the way you do, doesn't mean they aren't caring for themselves in other ways. It's true that you can't buy happiness, but if getting your nails done puts a smile on your face every time you look at them, that's good enough for me.
All my love,
